Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

Are you, like most American workers, spending a majority of your day on a digital device? You may be at risk for developing computer vision syndrome (CVS), also referred to as digital eye strain. Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, refers to a group of eye and vision-related conditions that result from using computers, tablets, e-readers, cell phones, and other electronic devices extensively. Many individuals experience eye discomfort and vision problems when viewing digital screens for extended periods of times.

Common symptoms associated with CVS or digitial eyestrain are:
Difficulty keeping eyes open
Headaches
Blurred vision
Dry eyes
Neck and shoulder pain
Sensitivity to light

The symptoms may be caused by:
Poor lighting
Glare on a digitial screen
Improper viewing distances
Uncorrected vision problems

Many of the symptoms experienced by users are only temporary and will decline after stopping computer work or use of the digital device. However, some individuals may experienced continued reduced visual abilities, and have blurred distance vision, even after stopping work on the computer.

Prevention tips:
Adjust lighting: make sure the area where you’re working is not too dim to help prevent reflection. If you have windows in your room, consider closing the blinds to prevent excess glare.
Follow the 20-20-20 rule: the most efficient way to limit CVS symptoms is to take frequent breaks from your device. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second rest, and look 20 feet away into the horizon. This allows the muscles inside your eye to relax and de-activate.
Blink consistently: it is providen that we do not blink enough when we are on digital devices, because you are so focused on performing the task at hand. This can lead to dry eye symptoms.
Change your viewing angle: Create a comfortable, and ergonomic work setup. For smaller screens such as a tablet or phone, try to hold the device 20-28 inches from your eyes and 4-5 inches below eye level. It should be at arm’s length away.

Digital eyestrain can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. A refraction is needed to determine the appropriate lens power needed to compensate for any refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism). You may have a different prescription depending on where you are looking – far away, computer distance, or reading distance.
